Adoption In India -1

Parenthood is parenthood. It is about holding a child in your arms and dreaming beautiful dreams for it and then slogging your ass off to make them all possible. The child's biological origins don't matter. I admire people who open their heart to children who need the love and care of a family.
This is part one of my guest post on a blog I frequently read, Policy wise.

With about 12.5 million orphan children and only 300 licensed NGOs helping to place them (source – indianngos.com) and an average placement time of 18 months with infants, the odds are not placed in favor of the kids or for foreign nationals hoping to adopt Indian kids. In India only 4000 kids are adopted each year and 320 visas were issued to orphaned immigrants by US in 2006. In lieu of this abysmal rate of adoption, the recent decision by CARA to shorten the proceedings to two months is welcome.
Go read the rest!

Ps. if anyone has a story about adoption, do tell.

Wow, I am glad posted about this!! I always, always wanted to adopt a child ..and I have had several discussion with my friends on this issue..but people have told that its not an easy decision when the time actually comes...

A delicate issue , well handled Sakshi, but before going after the govt. policies with all guns blazing, also consider why such apparently nonsense guidlines are there, ofcourse giving an orphan a loving home asap is important but to be careful about a child not to send him to a wrong home, and save them from possible exploitation is of even greater priority, waiting longer seems like a small price to pay to avoid such incidents.
Ofcourse the process can be fast tracked but not at the cost of taking the matter lightly

im sure ill do it one day... just a matter of time.

@Pallavi - Glad you liked the article. Yes, it is not an easy decision. More so, since Indian families are extended and hence the child could be exposed to animosity. However I know at least a couple of people who have adopted and they feel blessed to have a healthy child.

@Anon - yes, I agree. The laws should make sure that the child's interest is always safe gaurded. Yet, there are a couple of things that can be changed. The family case study for foreign people si done twice, once by a CARA appointed agency and then by CARA itself. This takes a long time and one of the studies can be dropped. More ever, I think the post adoption vigilance should be given more improtance. Another thing is that instead of giving custody under GAWA, foreign nationalsshould be made to fulfill all adoption proceeding in India.

@ Mazhalai - Way To GO!!! I am happy and proud to hear that.
